Geoffrey P. Gitner is a seasoned litigation lawyer with over twenty-five years of experience practicing in federal and state courts in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. He has tried and arbitrated over one hundred and fifty cases throughout the United States. He has extensive experience in civil litigation, specializing in business and commercial lawsuits, real estate litigation, professional malpractice, and shareholder and partnership disputes.
Mr. Gitner has successfully obtained multi-million dollar jury verdicts, arbitration awards and settlements in excess of several millions of dollars, as well as having successfully defended suits seeking million dollar claims.
Representative of Mr. Gitner's cases are:
2009 - Settled multimillion dollar government contract project litigation involving environmental test procedures.
2009 - Successfully defended an internationally known doctor in a medical malpractice case.
2008 - Represented 37 home owners in negotiating the sale of a neighborhood development rights.
2008 - Successfully enforced a covenant not to compete involving a medical practice.
2007 - Settled a major securities fraud case involving over $5.0 million.
2005 - Obtained a multi-million dollar settlement in a professional malpractice and lender liability suit for major league baseball players.
2004 - Won a $5.5 million dollar jury verdict in a shareholder dispute.
2003 - Received an award of $700,000 in an arbitration involving an officer's claim against his corporation.
2002 - Successfully represented a Washington, D.C. area bank in three separate lawsuits with verdicts in each case for the bank.
2001 - Obtained in excess of $15.0 million for a business client in a trade secret misappropriation case.
1999 - Obtained an arbitration award in excess of $1.1 million in a contract dispute between an individual against a Fortune 500 company.
1998 - Obtained $1.5 million from a health maintenance organization for failing to competently treat a policyholder.
1997 - Obtained an $8.0 million dollar settlement in a computer source code theft and corporate espionage case
1996 - Obtained what is believed to be have been the largest recovery ever in a District of Columbia legal malpractice suit.
1995 - Successfully defended the Virginia Wine Wholesalers in an antitrust action brought by Herbert Haft on behalf of his company, Total Beverages.
In 1995 and 1996 - Mr. Gitner obtained two personal injury awards in excess of $500,000.
1994 - Successfully represented Sonny Jurgensen in an employment contract dispute, that resulted in Mr. Jurgensen being able to leave W*USA and become a sports caster with WRC-TV.
1994 - Obtained a $6.0 million settlement in a real estate limited partnership derivative action.
1993 - Successfully prosecuted the first sexual harassment employment discrimination action under the recently passed United States Senate Equal Opportunity Act.
Mr. Gitner attended Georgetown University Law School and was an editor of the Georgetown Law Review. After law school he received a Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship to attend Northwestern University’s Trial Advocacy Program. Since going into private practice in 1980, Mr. Gitner's clients have ranged from individuals and small, family owned businesses to large national corporations and professional services organizations. He has represented, among others, the Teamsters Union and the Central States Pension Fund, the Union Labor Life Insurance Company, Ernst & Young, the Frontier Hotel and Casino, Cineplex Odeon Theatres, Franklin National Bank and Balcor Realty. He has also represented such sports personalities as Brian Jordan, Sonny Jurgensen, Dominique Dawes, George Starke and Robert Kuberski on contract disputes.
Mr. Gitner has also briefed and argued in excess of twenty appellate cases.
